Balanced Diet Really Is Brain Food

Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins B, C, D, and E andomega-3 fatty acids could help prevent brain shrinkage in the elderly and preserve mental acuity. In a recent study, researchers took blood samples from 104 healthy people whose average age was 87, administered tests of memory and thinking skills, and performed brain scans on 42 of the participants to assess brain volume. They found that those with the highest vitamin and omega-3 levels performed better on the cognitive tests and had larger brain volume than those with the lowest levels, while those with high levels oftrans fats in their blood had the poorest test scores and smaller brain volumes.
